Chapter 21
David, Powerless
Night fell, hours spun away and David sat at his desk, in his office, behind a locked door. The phone was at his ear. It was a few hours before dawn, but he knew his call would be answered. Maybe Brennan would already be awake, figuring in the time difference. He’d always been an early riser.
On the other end of the line, a wonderfully familiar voice whispered, “Yes?”
“Master,” David replied, unable to hold in a fond, vulnerable sort of smile. There was a soft exhale through the phone, a quiet hum, and that’s all it took. It was like they were back there again, in the dungeons of the Master’s Circle headquarters. The cameras were on; people were watching—important people. There was no privacy, but there had never been any, had there? Of course this would be the same.
Only it wasn’t.
Master Dom Brennan had always understood more than David ever expected him to. That’s the only reason why they worked so well, and why David had stayed so long.
“I’ve collared my submissive,” David admitted. “He’s living with me, and he’s been through hell. He’s counting on me in every way imaginable.”
There was a lot David wasn’t saying, but Brennan was one of the few who knew how to read between David’s lines. In fact, that’s where Brennan lived, on the other side of all of David’s order and formality, down in the dark where it was dirty and wild. Every time they spoke, or locked eyes, David felt instantly transported to someplace safe where only Brennan could reach him.
None of this was new. Brennan had seen war. David’s small troubles were nothing compared with that. The perspective was good to help David find a way through.
The soft scrape of Brennan’s voice and the gentle tumble of his British accent was tempting as he asked, “Do you need me to get on a plane?”
How to reply? David did want Brennan there. He’d easily correct the problem, but this was David’s war. Calling in Brennan would be as much of a copout as Dorian calling in his hired thugs. No, they had to do this the right way. And David had called for other reasons than to look for a hero to save him from problems he’d created for himself.
“You know I always need you, but now is not the time. Later, perhaps. You should meet him.”
“Tell me. What’s he like?”
“Hmm,” David hummed fondly, chuckling. “Young. Vulnerable. Pure. He makes me laugh.”
“How young?”
“Eighteen.”
“David,” Brennan said, scolding.
“I know. It wasn’t planned. None of this was.”
“How much danger is he in?”
“Plenty. Most of it is my fault.”
Brennan sighed and David slipped backward in time, back to that dungeon where he’d been stripped of all of the power he’d grown used to. Ropes wound around him, tied in knots, immobilizing his naked body completely. They were down on the cold ground and Brennan was behind him. Two fingers were pressed into David’s body as the cool flat of his Master’s exceedingly sharp blade slid over the skin of David’s bound and vulnerable testicles.
