The last twenty-four hours have been a nightmare.

I’ve regretted my decision to stay with him so many times. I can’t believe I thought I could handle the situation.

Thinking that things would be all right and I would get out of here unharmed was unrealistic.

I should’ve known things would turn out this way.

Alexei didn’t leave my side. He guarded me every moment of every fucking hour.

Even when I went to sleep, he patrolled the corridor as if someone was about to break in and kidnap me.

I don’t know what kind of shady business Vanya has gotten into––if that’s what’s all about––but it can’t be good.

And I don’t think their surveillance had to do with me leaving the house or them suspecting that I was going out to meet someone.

I think it’s a combination of factors, and right now, it’s not clear to my husband what the best course of action is when it comes to me.

Am I leverage to him? Am I a liability?

He takes it step by step with me, hoping to figure it out.

I don’t know what Baron had told Alexei, but something happened. His words impacted him, and later I heard Vanya and Alexei talk about a new business deal.

I couldn’t catch more details.

Whatever it was, Alexei came to my room and delivered the news. The trip was back on.

Thank God.

I swore that once I stepped out of the country, he wouldn’t get me again.

Finally, I caught a few hours of sleep, and I was in better spirits when I woke up.

I even cracked a smile at Katia while eating breakfast.

Things were okay before he returned.

It’s hard to tell what happened last night, but he looked like he’d spent it disposing of dead bodies. I fear that if I looked closer at his suit, I’d spot traces of blood.

It scared the shit out of me.

I knew I could be his next victim, only a fleeting memory made of dried blood on his pants.

It’s gotten so bad I couldn’t think of anything else, but now we’re up here in the air, cruising at an altitude of 30,000 feet.

He’s chatting with his men while I keep my eyes closed.

Their words slide by me, my mind doing what’s always done best, helping me escape into a different dimension, and taste a new kind of life.

Behind my closed eyes, a different life unfolds.

I’m back home, doing regular stuff. Meeting normal people.

It’s been years since I left, and I haven’t had the chance to live like a normal person, not even for a moment. To have my own place, spend time with my friends, and enjoy what my city has to offer.

I was plucked away and thrown into a new culture, a different world, and a new life in which I was stripped of my fundamental rights.

The men’s voices hum in the background while I get a flashback of my life with Vanya. For the first few weeks and months, I was terrified.

Completely in denial, I couldn’t grasp what was going on. I lived under different rules in a stranger’s house in a foreign country.
