CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

AT THE house, Marc led them to his room. His face was set and rigid.

“Why not go to the hospital?” Owen asked. He peered tentatively around as if trouble lurked in the corners. For the first time all week, Owen felt a strong pull to be back at St. James, where the routine held comfort and the outside world always appeared a distant mark on the horizon. Here in Ocean Vista, life was roaring through him, overwhelming him with highs and lows. He wanted to slap whoever had hurt sweet Morgan. The intensity of his reaction frightened him a little, and Owen’s legs shook slightly as he entered the house. “Shouldn’t he see a doctor?”

“Hell yes, but Morgan refuses. He showed up here and begged me to take him inside. At first, he wouldn’t tell me what was wrong, but I got a little out of him. He won’t go to the doctor. Says he’s fine, that he did see an EMT, doesn’t need more, just needs to rest. Fucking kid. I told him to be careful—we all told him.” Marc let loose a string of obscenities. “I wanna kill them.”

“Them? It was more than one guy?” Andrew frowned. “Kurt and his asshole friends, maybe?”

“Two of them. Morgan hasn’t said who. They slipped him the drug when he went to the john. When he came back and drank his beer, they had him walk outside of Swanky’s for some air. And….” Marc’s eyes glittered with fury and more. “They didn’t get as far as they planned. Somebody scared them off and called an ambulance. Morgan was taken to the hospital, but as soon as he realized what was going on, he refused to stay and came here.”

“Where’s the person who rescued him?”

“Who the fuck knows? They chased off the two guys and got him an ambulance. But they didn’t exactly stick around to give their identification.”

“So he wasn’t…. They didn’t….”

“Rape him?” Marc answered. “No. They started to assault him. He’s got bruises on his thighs and all. But I don’t think they finished getting his clothes off when—the details are still hazy because Morgan is a freaking mess. Don’t push him on it, okay?” Marc cautioned as they reached his bedroom door. “He asked to see you, Andrew, but don’t push him.”

Andrew swiped a tear from his eye. “I promise.”

Owen’s stomach lurched at the sight of Morgan. In Marc’s bed, the sheets pulled up to his chin, he looked so young and fragile. His face appeared freshly scrubbed, his dark hair sticking out in all directions, and raw fear in his eyes.

“Hey there.” Andrew spoke as you would to a frightened dog. “You okay?”

“Yeah… I don’t remember a lot.” Morgan hooked his thumbs under his armpits in a protective gesture, closing his body off from view, his shoulders rounded, head slightly down. “I just want to apologize for not showing up today and because I can’t—” He broke off and stumbled on his words, sucked in a breath, and tried again.
