There were enough guests at the party for Kim to avoid Fran. They had a lovely lunch and Taylor and Kristin both gave short speeches thanking everyone for coming and talking about what they meant to each other. There wasn’t a dry eye at the tables by the time they’d finished. They’d broken with tradition, partly because Kristin’s family weren’t there to speak on her behalf, and done their own speeches. Taylor’s father had however insisted on talking on behalf of both himself and Kristin’s father, Lance.

“Lance and I are proud of our girls. We played golf together a couple of months ago when he and Judith visited, and we talked about how wonderful it is to see them happy. Our wives, of course, feel the same way. Both families are gaining a daughter, and we couldn’t be more delighted.”

Kim excused herself from the table once the engagement cake was cut and the celebrations continued. After her third glass of wine, she’d switched to water, but was now desperate for the bathroom. She weaved her way through the tables into the old homestead quickly finding the sign pointing to the restrooms. She was relieved to see the ladies room empty and quickly used a stall, grateful she hadn’t had to queue. She washed her hands and began touching up her makeup when the door to the bathroom opened. Fran stepped in. She flinched momentarily seeing her and then continued applying her lipstick, taking a lot longer than she needed to.

“Kim! It’s great to see you.”

Fran approached her, arms out suggesting she planned to hug her.

Kim shook her head and placed her lipstick back in her bag, turning her body sideways to Fran’s approaching hug. Fran got the message and stopped.

“Everything okay?”

“Why are you here? You hardly know Kristin and Taylor, and you knew I’d be here. Why come?”

“I was invited and didn’t think it would be a big deal.”

“You’re dating Danni now?”

“No, not really. We went out a couple of times, and she asked if I wanted to come with her. She didn’t want to come alone. I liked Kristin and Taylor from the course we did at The Food Academy. I was kind of hoping I’d bump into you too.”

“Why?”

“I heard you moved to New York which explains why I haven’t seen you around, that’s all.”

Kim raised an eyebrow. “Have you been looking for me?”

Fran shrugged. “Maybe. Look, I didn’t do the right thing when I was with you. I should have told you straight up that I’d come out of a horrible relationship and wasn’t willing to risk anything like it again. That’s why I came up with the two-week rule. I figured if I ended all new relationships by the two-week mark, then we’d both walk away having had a great time and no one would get hurt. I didn’t give much thought to your feelings though. It was self-preservation. I’d had my heart broken and couldn’t risk it again.”

“So, you broke mine instead?”

Fran’s mouth dropped open. “I broke your heart?”

Kim nodded.
