Chapter Nineteen

Teddy

“You call me if you need anything, okay?” I tell Alexa as I stand in her doorway. I’ve gotten rid of the roses that were here yesterday, not wanting her to have to look at the reminders of her past any longer than she needs to. She doesn’t deserve that.

“I will,” she murmurs, and she manages to smile at me. “Thank you, Teddy.”

“You don’t have to thank me,” I promise her. “Anytime you need me, all you have to do is call, all right?”

She pulls me in for a hug, pressing her head against my shoulder as though she doesn’t want to let me go. I know how she feels. I squeeze her tight, wishing I could stay longer, but I have to get to a meeting with Maddy, and I know better than to leave her waiting any longer than necessary.

I drop a kiss on her cheek and turn to head out of the apartment building, hoping the press haven’t figured out where I am. The last thing I need right now is for someone to catch me at Alexa’s apartment and spread even more rumors about us. Maddy has only just wrapped her head around letting us be together at all, and, if she finds out I haven’t run a meeting by her, she’s going to be furious.

But it wasn’t as though I could have just stepped back and left Alexa alone last night, even if my PR team didn’t want me out there with her. The moment I heard her voice on the end of the line, I could tell she needed help, and I would be damned if I didn’t give it to her.

It makes so much sense, what she told me about her ex—even if it makes me so angry I can’t think straight at the same time. I can’t believe someone would do that to her, that someone would hurt her the way she’s been hurt by him. No wonder she’s been so intent on getting out and having fun, after being trapped in that relationship for so long. In those years, she should have been getting her feet under her and enjoying adult life for the first time, she was being controlled by a guy more than twice her age, and the fact she made it out in one piece is incredible to me. It’s clear she’s still carrying trauma from what she went through, but she’s so much stronger than she gives herself credit for—than the rest of the world does, too.

It’s clear there is a front she presents to the public and a version of herself she keeps private, and I’m glad to have gotten to know the private version of her from the start. She’s shown me that side of herself, shown me the truth of who she is beneath the press interpretation of her, and I think I’m falling for her.

I know I am. She’s funny, she’s sweet, she’s inspiring, and she makes me feel seen and heard in a way nobody else has in a long time.
