Next morning they ate breakfast in the subdued lighting from behind the curtains. Luckily, these were neither heavy not lined. This became of more value once the meal was over, when Paul cleared the table and led Ginny across the landing to one of the unoccupied rooms. ‘I thought we could find something in here,’ he gestured to a fitted cupboard at the rear of the room.

After he opened the doors, Ginny peered inside. One of the shelves was stacked with a variety of board games. ‘Where did you get those from?’ she asked.

‘The previous owners left them. Apparently they used to play the games with their kids, but as the children had grown up and the parents were moving to live abroad, they didn’t want to take them along. They asked me to dispose of them at a jumble sale or something, but I never got round to it. To be honest I’d forgotten all about them until last night when you asked how we were going to pass the time. Even then, a game of Monopoly was the last thing on my mind.’

‘Yes, I sort of guessed that,’ Ginny replied. She thought for a moment, then added, ‘Of course, the problem with these is we’ll be limited by the amount of light available. We’ll have to think of something else when it gets too dark to see.’

The day passed quickly, with a game of Scrabble that was enlivened by good-natured arguments over the existence of certain words, and the spelling of others. Some of the debate got mildly physical, which they both enjoyed more than the game. After that they played Monopoly, where they discovered that each had a naturally acquisitive nature. After checking in with DS Stone at six o’clock, Paul prepared dinner. As they ate, Ginny raised a question she hadn’t considered earlier. ‘How do we go on about showering?’

‘We can’t have one tonight. It’s too dark and the shower light comes on along with the fan. As the bathroom looks out over the side street, it would be a dead giveaway. The window shows up against the dark stone of the building.’

‘How do you know that?’

Paul grimaced. ‘Bitter experience. I went out once and forgot to switch them off. When I returned it was illuminating the street like the beam from a lighthouse. If you want a shower it might be better to wait until morning.’

They retired early, but despite their inactivity both were tired, so after kissing one another, they quickly fell asleep. Ginny woke up just before dawn, to find Paul was no longer there. Still half asleep she got up and went into the lounge, to find him seated at the dining table. ‘Are you all right, darling? Is something wrong?’ she asked. ‘I was worried when I woke up because you weren’t there.’

‘I got woken up by a strange noise,’ he told her. ‘I came out to investigate, and it turned out to be two cats enjoying themselves. By that time
