“Good, ‟cause I love you too.” Billy returned his kiss, and Darryl felt his heart soar in his chest. Brushing Billy‟s hair out of his eyes, he stood up and quietly left the room, cracking the door.

Taking a last peek inside, he saw that his lover was already asleep, a small smile on his face.

Downstairs, Darryl found the boys in the backyard, playing with their trucks. Making sure they were okay, he went out front, unloaded the car, and brought their things inside.

“Would you like me to read you a story?” he asked from the entrance to the backyard once everything was in its temporary place.

“Clifford!” Davey called back.

“I want Babar,” Donnie argued, both of them leaving their trucks where they were, racing toward where Darryl stood.

“I‟ll read both of them if you‟ll put your toys away.” Darryl smiled as the boys rushed to clean up and then clomped through the house behind him and into the back sitting room. Picking up the books he‟d left downstairs, he let each boy pick one and then sat on the sofa with a five-year-old on either side of him. “Clifford the Big Red Dog.” Both boys settled down to listen as Darryl opened the book and began to read.

By the time both stories were done, Darryl sat between two sleeping kids, each leaning against him. He‟d barely started the second book when first Donnie and then Davey had shifted on the sofa, curling up against his side. Getting up slowly, he resettled each of the boys and covered them with the throw from the back of the sofa. Reaching into the bag of toys he‟d set aside, Darryl found a stuffed bear and a hippo. As he set them next to the boys, the plush animals were immediately cuddled to them in their sleep.

Leaving the room, he climbed the stairs and went to where Billy was sleeping. Slipping off his shoes, he climbed beneath the covers, and Billy immediately curled up to him without waking.
