A Note on Privilege

It’s time for an acknowledgement of privilege before we go any further. Being mixed race in the UK, and many other countries, brings with it a healthy dollop of privilege. The obnoxious and toxic laws of colourism dictate that the lighter your skin the more desirable you are, the less threatening you seem, the less likely you are to be a victim of racism.

While I’ll share some of my experiences as a mixed-race woman in this essay, they, quite literally, pale in comparison to the experiences of black women in Britain and beyond, and the constant ignorant barrage of life-threatening racism and misogynoir they endure.
