Matt was with Steph when I arrived at her store and I couldn't bring myself to mention the photos in front of him. He would find out soon enough, maybe through Adam or Ryan, but not through me. Since the two of them were inseparable, that meant I couldn't tell Steph either. Instead, I mentioned the date with Avery Madden.

"The chef?" Steph gaped at me. "How did you score a date with him?"

"My mother knows him. He's flying in today and wants to go on a date with someone tonight."

She narrowed her gaze. "Someone? Or with you?"

I shrugged. I didn't know and I didn't really care.

Matt stretched out his long legs and rested his hand over Steph's. We sat on the couches positioned in a cozy nook in her bookstore, our coffees on the table between us. He squeezed her hand, drawing a glance from her. Her gaze narrowed further before clearing. Something had just passed between them, spoken in a language only they could understand. I felt excluded.

"What do you want, Emma?" Steph asked.

I wanted the photographer to die a horrible death. No, that was awful. I wanted him or her to withdraw the photos, to apologize, and to admit why he'd taken them. Failing that, I wanted to turn back time and not sleep with Adam.

Neither of those things was going to happen and I had to live with the consequences now. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, you don't sound very enthusiastic about meeting Avery Madden when, let's face it, he's a good looking man, he can cook, and he's in demand right now."

Matt pouted. "I can cook."

She pecked his cheek. "And very well too. But we're not discussing you. The thing is," she said to me, "you should be more pleased about this date than you sound."

"I've got a lot on my mind right now," I mumbled into my coffee cup.

"I thought the promotion was practically yours."

"Maybe. I don't know anymore."

"Then shouldn't you be at work instead of pretending to be sick?"

I sighed. She was my conscience come to life.

"Let me throw a theory out there," Steph said, squeezed Matt's hand. What the hell was going on between them? "You're not very interested in this date with Avery because you met someone else."

I set the cup down with a clunk on the table. "Adam told you about the weekend, didn't he?"

Matt gave me a sheepish look. "He called me last night. I've gotta say, Emma, Steph and I are so happy for you. You and Adam make a great couple."

"We're not a couple." I picked up my cup again and swirled the dregs of the coffee around the bottom. "That was just…something that happened."

The weighty silence had me lifting my gaze to them. They both blinked back at me.

"Um, okay," Steph said, too cheerfully for my liking. What was she up to?

Matt drew in a breath to speak, but Steph placed her other hand over the top of his, silencing him. He settled back in the couch with a brooding scowl.
