Mark: For the purposes of the Head film, a concert was held in Salt Lake City on this date in order to get a good live take of Circle Sky. The Monkees also performed the above songs at that concert as well as live versions of You Just May Be the One, Sunny Girlfriend, Cuddly Toy, Two-Part Invention in F-Major, Last Train to Clarksville, I Wanna Be Free, Forget That Girl, The Girl I Knew Somewhere, You Told Me and Mary, Mary. Originally, only the live version of take 3 of Circle Sky has been officially released, both in the film and on the 1994 Rhino CD reissue of Head, but four more songs (You Just May Be the One, Sunny Girlfriend, You Told Me plus a different take of Circle Sky) were finally released on the HEAD DELUXE EDITION (2010), including the eight-minute “Introduction to Live Show” (recorded in Salt Lake City: May 17, 1968).

The full concert may eventually be released someday, but it is a haphazard affair as there are multiple takes of many songs including 10 alone for Circle Sky and a couple rehearsal jams and there are sound quality issues. Andrew Sandoval in his Day by Day book claims, “Despite the group turning in some decent renditions of such rarely performed numbers as You Told Me and Cuddly Toy, today’s tapes are very poorly engineered. Most of the vocals are barely audible. Because of this, take 3 of Circle Sky, which is to be used as the basis for the film version, will be given a newly recorded vocal by Michael on May 21st.”
