Refitting was used sporadically during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and until the 1960s mainly for technological reconstructions. From the 1960s onwards new excavation methods involving more precise documentation of finds were introduced for Palaeolithic sites. Through the innovative use of refitting at Pincevent (Leroi-Gourhan & Brezillon 1966) it became clear that the potential of the method exceeded reconstructing procedures for flake or blade manufacture and so refitting became crucial in behavioural and site analysis. Today, the conjoining of artefacts (bone and/or stone) is considered as a standard procedure in the analysis of stone age sites. The growing popularity of the method is nicely shown by a cumulative diagram of international publications (1880-1988) on the subject which was published by Arts & Cziesla (1990, 652, Figure 2; see also Hofman 1981, 691). Recent examples where refitting analyses have been successfully employed are the Upper Palaeolithic sites of Meer and Rekem in Belgium (Cahen et al. 1979; de Bie 1998), Pincevent in France (LeroiGourhan 1984) and the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic sites of Boxgrove in England (Austin 1994; Bergman & Roberts 1988; Bergman et al. 1990), Rheindahlen in Germany (Thieme 1983, 1990) and last but not least, the findspots at Maastricht-Belvédère in the Netherlands, some samples of which are discussed in this article (de Loecker 1994; Roebroeks 1988; Roebroeks et al. 1997).
