V-stitch chart

Notice how the stitches do not form V’s at first when worked over either waste yarn or a circular knitting needle. Instead, they read straight up and down as (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) across.

Double crochet stitches; not yet V-stitches, when worked over waste-cotton or circular knitting needle

When laying down the chain later, the hook goes into the underside of two double crochet (four loops total) in the slip stitch that links them together. So after joining the yarn to the underside of the first chain, chain 2, * slip stitch into the underside of the next two double crochet together, chain 3; then repeat from the * across, ending with chain 2, slip stitch in the underside of the last double crochet.

SHELL STITCH LACE PATTERN. In this lace pattern, you work four double crochet into the same chain. The chart begins with chain 47. On row 1, work (2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) in the eighth chain from the hook, * skip four chains, work (2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) in the next chain; repeat from the * across, and end by skipping three chains and making a double crochet in the last chain. On subsequent rows, you work a shell stitch (2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) in the same chain-1 space of the previous shell stitch.
