Two nights later, Kassidy was laying on her couch, binging episodes of M*A*S*H with Isla snuggled securely on her feet. She’d taken Lina’s advice and put her articles on hold for another week. Her editors had all been pretty understanding. She felt disconnected, but having time to rest her brain and body felt nice. She’d been thinking about Alexis, but hadn’t called her again. If she wanted space, Kassidy needed to give her that.

It was about eight o’clock, and Brett had already left for work. Her phone rang. She didn’t recognize the number, but most numbers she didn’t know were sources. Maybe it was someone she had already called for an article.

“Hello?”

“Kassidy?” The voice was hopeful, and Kassidy froze.

“Abigail? Uh, hi. I didn’t know you had my number.” She had changed her number when she moved to Sacramento, so how had she gotten it?

“Oh, yeah. Sorry, your mom texted me the other day. She said she forgot to give you my number, so she sent me yours. I’ve been wanting to get in touch with you since Auburn.”

“Oh, okay.” This made sense. Kassidy and Abigail were really close in their San Francisco days, so she was sure her mom didn’t think twice about giving Abigail her number.

Calm down, Kassidy.

Abigail wasn’t a bad person. They didn’t have to be close now, but it didn’t hurt to catch up over a phone call.

“Yeah, how have you been? How’s the new company?”

“It’s going great. The Sacramento business community has been super welcoming. This was a good move for me,” Abigail gushed. “How are you? How is your writing going?”

“It’s good. I’m doing a lot of freelancing right now. I have to take a little break though. I was in a car accident a little over a week ago, and I got kind of…banged up.” Kassidy didn’t feel the need to expand on her injuries.

“Oh, no! I’m sorry. Let me know if you need anything. I can stop by with supplies. Whatever you need.”

“Okay, thanks.” Kassidy felt guilty, but at this point she wanted to end the call and get back to Alan Alda’s thought-provoking scene.

“So,” Abigail wasn’t going to let that happen yet, “have you heard anything from Kurt?”

“What?” Kassidy’s jaw dropped and her phone nearly had the same fate.

“Remember how I told you I saw Kurt in Sacramento? I was wondering if he reached out to you. He hasn’t reached out to me,” she said, and Kassidy heard the faintest note of anxiety in her voice.

Kassidy was stone silent. She wasn’t sure if this conversation was really happening. When she spoke again, her words were measured and slow. “Why would Kurt reach out to me after what happened in San Francisco? He told the most hateful lies about me, Abigail. Tried to ruin my reputation. Why would he care to have any contact with me?”

“I know…I was just wondering. I didn’t know why he would be here otherwise. I told him I was moving here, but…” She sounded more frantic than anxious now.
