This Cascade Caverns Salamander, Eurycea latitans (top), is from the type locality—that is, the locality where the species was first found and named—in Cascade Caverns, Texas. This species has variability in appearance both between and within populations. Members of the population at the type locality have functional eyes and some pigmentation remaining. Members of some other cave-dwelling populations have reduced, nonfunctional eyes and little or no pigment. Red Salamanders, Pseudotriton ruber (bottom), are sometimes found in caves, and certain populations are known to deposit their eggs in caves. Further Reading: Miller et al., 2008.
