The Entrance Ceremony as an “International” Event

If the student orientation excursion is a practical introduction to the college’s rules, routines, and administration, where the ura (behind-the-scenes) operations of the institution are explained, the entrance ceremony (nyūga-kushiki) is a more formal, ceremonial affair that displays and dramatizes the school’s omote (something exposed to public attention). Students would describe the Entrance Ceremony as an event where they formally became Takasu students and as a chance to become acquainted with Takasu’s unique school spirit (kōfū). One student, in a cynical vein, said that the purpose of the ceremony was to show off the majesty (sōgon) and social standing (kakushiki) of the president.

To impress upon the new students and others in attendance (parents, relatives, friends) that this is indeed an “internationalized” college, the entrance ceremony is highlighted every year by a gesuto supīkā (guest speaker) from overseas, usually a well-established academic. Like all major school functions, the entrance ceremony is discussed at a faculty meeting and follows a prescribed sequence of events.
