Chapter 19

Tom Henley sped toward Bowling Green on New Year’s Eve, his heart rate high with worry and his patience low for the clogged traffic. Would he make it in time? Leah had taken a turn for the worse.

Arriving at noon, the hours stretched, filling Tom with a range of emotions as his beloved wife lingered in the twilight of life and death. One minute, he wished for her to leave the misfortune of this existence behind, and the next, his eyes welled up with guilt. He took Leah’s hand, brushing her cheek with the other, and spoke to her, calling up memories of happy times in a quiet tone.

“You’re my heart and soul, and nothing will ever change this. You know that, right?” Tom squeezed Leah’s listless hand, wishing with every fiber of his being she could hear him, but she remained unresponsive.

A growl sliced through Tom’s throat as he rubbed both hands over his face, reflecting on the night of the accident. The trauma specialist had tried to prepare him that she might not recover from the head trauma. Leah had survived, but at what cost? Had she ever recognized him when he visited? He’d convinced himself she did. He’d spotted a flare in her eyes that gave him hope she’d be better one day. It infused him with the strength he needed to do what he had to.

Tom fastened his gaze on Leah’s gaunt face. Was she the fortunate one at this point? Guilt knotted his gut. Soon, he would go to prison, and his life would transform in ways he never could have foreseen. Leah’s care would have to change as well. He would no longer be able to keep her in this luxury facility that had become her home, not with the soaring medical and legal fees and his assets frozen. Where would she go? He didn’t even want to imagine. Who’d visit her when he started his prison term? Tom winced as he weighed the questions. That’s when it struck him. Leah’s life diminishing precisely at this point had to be one of life’s strangest designs.

His wife’s breathing rose, and Tom sat up straight. Was death near? Her breathing evened out again, and Tom’s mind traveled back to the accident.

With two broken ribs, scrapes, and bruises, he’d walked away from the car crash that disastrous winter day, only life had played a cruel joke by sentencing Leah for his reckless driving. Her state of survival was a punishment far beyond the worst thing that could ever happen to him. Why her? No, no. He’d been so angry with the universe, but he vowed to his unconscious wife he’d spare no expense in locating the most skilled care to manage her recovery. He wasn’t a spiritual man, and he certainly didn’t trust in miracles, but for the first time in years, he’d begged a higher power. However long it takes, but please don’t take her life.

Leah recovered just enough to require specialized care. He found Garden Grove Manor.
