Since finding out that Oscar was his mate, Liam kept to himself. He locked his bedroom door and stayed inside his room, wanting to be alone. The first night was a shock, but as each day passed, he realized that Oscar wasn’t going to claim him. After a full week, his anger turned to worry. He didn’t want the vampire to starve to death.

Going to the clinic, he filled a bag of blood and handed it off to Sam. He knew his brother would get it to Oscar. After his brothers left, Liam stripped off his clothing and shifted. Running around the pack-owned property helped him feel a little bit better about the whole situation. He didn’t want to think about Oscar or what his future now looked like. He would be alone, and he hated being alone.

Spotting a large tree, Liam used the last of his energy. He got a running start and climbed up the tree using his powerful muscles. The branches swayed under his weight, but it didn’t stop him from making his way up higher. Finding a strong branch, Liam lay down and went limp. He closed his eyes and relaxed as the breeze blew on his face, ruffling his fur.

Liam woke up from his nap to a sweet scent tickling his nose. Blinking his eyes open, he looked down and saw Oscar standing at the base of the tree. He growled low, licking his lips. It was true. Oscar really was his mate. Liam stared at him, the moment of silence stretching until finally Oscar spoke.

“I…uh…I don’t even know where to begin. I practiced a speech on the way here, but now…” He shook his head, appearing uncertain. “I can’t seem to find the right words. You aren’t the only one with a past and baggage. I’m nothing special, trust me. I’m not a catch.” Oscar’s words hurt Liam.

He didn’t like seeing the self-confident vampire struggle to speak. The man was his mate. As far as Liam was concerned, he was perfect, perfect for him.

“I created a persona when I first moved to New Orleans. I didn’t want anyone to see me as weak—which I was a long time ago. I put up with a lot of abuse from my own father,” he started, and Liam felt like he couldn’t breathe.

His claws grew out, gripping the large tree branch as he thought of all his mate had endured. He wasn’t sure how similar their pasts were, but he had a better understanding of why Oscar had stayed away. It made sense as to why Oscar became interested in the BDSM scene. The man needed the power of a dominant role to prove that he had power over his own life.

“My father wasn’t an easy man to please and I learned quickly that I wasn’t good enough, that I would never be good enough. The truth is I’m the man’s bastard child. Which hundreds of years ago was a very bad thing to be.
