Arrange your easel so that the light falls over your left shoulder. This position is probably the best for lighting your work. A remote light from the opposite direction will permit you to cup the palm of your hand to the left of the letter and still leave the other edge of the letter clearly visible for a check.

Having a correct source of light is important. Light should fall over the left shoulder and any strong source of light should be shaded so that the edge of the V-cut can be seen.

To cut, you should hit the end of the chisel with a letter-cutter’s dummy, which is round, and not with a flat-faced hammer. Shoddy blows are more easily avoided on a round surface, and you will soon appreciate the direct drive that results from hitting correctly. Never try to achieve a cut through applying pressure on the chisel-holding hand. The actual cut should result almost entirely from the blows of the dummy. If the angle of the chisel in relation to the surface to be cut is correct, it will enter the slate. If the angle is too shallow, the chisel will slip and slide on the surface. If too steep, it will not travel. Experience will soon provide the answer. It helps to stand with feet well apart, taking a good stance and using your entire body to guide the chisel. The best work will result from continuous attention to these few general rules.
