CHAPTER 6

PROMENADERS AND PRANKS

‘I love being so close to the Promenaders in the arena and I love their exuberance and their enthusiasm. I thought it was fantastic. It was such a great experience.

‘The more going on, the happier I am. I thrive on chaos! It’s fun, and it’s great to be part of such an enthusiastic evening and such a wonderful celebration. It starts from even before the concert begins. Walking up the hill and everybody wanting your picture and autograph and a chat, it just feels like they can’t wait.

‘It’s rare that you go to do a concert where everybody is there because they really want to be’

– Marin Alsop, conductor

The Promenaders in the arena, snuggling close to the orchestra, are very much a part of the Last Night entertainment. Many of them are familiar faces and, like seasoned entertainers, they know what is expected of them and how to deliver it.

When it comes to making the most of the occasion, there are certain traditions to be followed. This often involves those in the arena doing a ‘double act’ with their gallery colleagues, as well as making the right moves for the ‘Fantasia’ section. So, if you’re a Last Night novice, follow this simple guide to becoming a proper Prommer.
