Concluding questions

This chapter has been concerned with a necessarily brief discussion of some abstract issues, and with raising rather insistently a range of questions concerning matters usually taken for granted. In conclusion, it is suggested that progress in clarifying the issues involved is likely to follow from the attempt to develop curiosity about actual social work experience. If, for instance, one reflects on the experience of moving from one field of social work to another, it is worth asking questions about the move. What was it like? Did it resemble a civil servant changing ministries, a classics master turning to teach German or carpentry, or a lawyer changing from the practice of criminal to the practice of commercial law? As the worker moved, say from child care to probation, what more did he need to know in order to work effectively? Would the situation be adequately described in terms of meeting a familiar set of problems in a different organisational setting or would the worker see himself as confronted with the task of learning the different psychology of those ‘seeking help’ from the probation service?
