The position of the horizon line is very important in composing reflection images. Central horizons can be boring, particularly if the scene is symmetrical. However, it can be effective if the shapes of the subject and its reflection are interesting enough. The reflected scene is always much brighter than the reflection, so a graduated neutral density filter can help to even out the general exposure.

Streams, waterfalls and ponds are good for reflections of plants, particularly reflections of autumn foliage, which make a strong use of warm colours. Where trees are in direct sunlight and the reflection is in the shade interesting reflections can occur. The late afternoon light is usually good for reflected images, and the sun is low enough to create warm colours on the trees, even if the water is in shadow. Rocks or stones can be used to lead into the image, framing around the reflections in the water. Waterfalls can create some interesting colours in water.
