The purses in this book are based on Victorian beaded purses, worked as Beaded Knitting, as explained in Chapter 3. The samples have all been worked by using No. 8 Pearl Cotton yarn, size 10 or size 11 seed beads and fine, steel knitting needles. Beads must be threaded on to the knitting yarn before you start to work a project, but you should not try to thread all of the beads required on to the yarn at the start of the project, as this may result in the yarn being worn by the beads being pushed along the yarn.

The patterns for the Leaves Amulet Purse, Shades-of-Blue Amulet Purse and Silver Evening Bag are written in a slightly different way to most knitting patterns. The purses are worked in garter stitch with beads being strung between groups of stitches. The first row of the pattern will be written out with the number of stitches to knit and the number of beads to be pushed up next to the stitch just knitted. After this first row, the pattern will simply list the number of beads to be strung between each group of stitches across the row.
