Chapter 3

Dawn had already finger -painted the sky with her rosy hues when Logan awoke. They had left the drapes closed, of course, but a tiny slit between the left and right drapes gave him a hint of the sunrise painting riotous colors in the world out there.

He was torn between letting Drew sleep and waking him. Obviously Drew was tired, yet they needed to get going. Logan rose up on one elbow to look at the bedside clock on Drew’s side of the bed. His movement awakened Drew, who apparently was close to awakening of his own accord.

“We need to hit the road, buddy,” Logan said to the bleary-eyed Drew, who looked at him and smiled fondly. Is he remembering last night’s exchange of “I love you’s?

“Let me just—” Drew scrambled out of bed and raced for the bathroom in a headlong rush. When he was finished in there, Logan followed. The couple—yes, Logan thought of them now as a couple, however temporarily—got dressed, packed their things up, went to the front desk, turned in their room key, went to the truck, made sure it was undisturbed, left their bags there, and returned to the restaurant at which they’d had dinner the night before

Of course, the same waitress—she of the big eyes for Drew—was not there. A matronly woman—in fact, one who looked like she ought to be postretirement already—thudded heavily footed over to their table, energetic despite her years and her girth.

“G’morning, guys,” she greeted them cheerily. “What can I get for you this beautiful morning?”

“French toast, please,” Logan said.

“Waffles, please,” Drew said.

“Want anything with that?” the waitress asked, scribbling on her pad. “And coffee?”

“Yes to the coffee, and how about a side of hash browns? And maybe some bacon, too? I’m hungry this morning.” Logan stifled a yawn as he spoke.

“Me, too, for coffee, and those hash browns sound good,” Drew said.

“Bacon for you, too?”

“How about some sausage? What do you have, links or patties?”

“Both. Which do you want?”

“Patties, I guess, please.”

“Coffee now?”

“Yes, please,” both answered at once.

“Coming right up. Let me just get your orders working.”

“Well, we have one more load to deliver,” Logan said to Drew, “and then we go to Miami and get the last of the stuff off the truck and pick up another shipment.”

“Those three tall cartons? They’re going to Metairie, right?”

“Right. Then all we’ll have left in the trailer is the consignment to deliver in Miami. I’ll be dropping you off there, too. I’m sure gonna miss you.”

“I’ll never forget you. This trip has been—it’s been something else. Don’t be surprised if I call you often. I’m gonna miss the hell out of you. Where are you headed when you leave Miami?”

“The shipment I’m picking up in Miami is going to Annapolis, Maryland. From there I have to drive empty to Rochester, New York, to pick up another load. That’s going to San Diego.”

“And from there?”

“Dunno. We’ll see where the four winds take me.”

“I envy your life. Travelling all over like that, never knowing where you’ll be going next.
