Chapter 12

Scar

“King wants to see you.” Bishop stared at me, all beady-eyed and intense, his usual amused gaze lacking anything but seriousness. He sat on the opposite side of the table, his short hair still wet from a recent shower.

“No.” I shoved a spoonful of the shit they called soup into my mouth. The food tasted like a dog’s breakfast, but it was calories, and I’d learned the moment I got into prison not to raise hell about it. Complaining only earned you something worse, like spit in the already-horrible food they passed you.

The mess hall was loud tonight, with cons either arguing with one another or trying to be heard over all the other noise.

“King doesn’t take no for an answer, you know that.” Bishop leaned on the table. Destiny was latched onto his arm, his hot pink nails digging into Bishop’s muscles. I didn’t know what was happening there, but I didn’t care either. Surprisingly, Bishop hadn’t told me anything about his latest conquest.

I stared directly at Bishop and pursed my lips. “King knows I don’t want to see him or the boys. I don’t want visitors. Any message he’s given me, it’s been through you. What’s changed?”

Bishop shrugged. “Don’t know. I’m just passing along the word, mate. He said he wants to see you, and I ain’t bloody foolish enough to argue. You either call him and tell him no yourself, or see him during visiting hours like he wants. Don’t be a twat and use me as your scapegoat.”

“Is King your president?” Destiny asked as he petted Bishop’s arm.

Bishop smiled at him. “You know the rules, princess. You don’t hear a thing me and Scar say about the club.”

Destiny swiped his hair out of his face and smiled, flashing Bishop those pearly whites. “Not a thing.”

“That’s my boy.”

I snorted, but instead of responding, I shoved another spoonful of soup in my mouth, ignoring the heat that burned my tongue.

Charley dropped onto the bench beside me, his face freshly flushed from a hot shower and his wet hair clinging to his forehead. A warm grin spread across his face, the first I’d seen of anything like it from him. Toxic sludge curled in my stomach, the piss-poor food curdled by jealousy that gave me the urge to rip Brandon’s head off. I’d seen him around before Charley, of course, but he never got on my radar. There was nothing threatening about a recovered addict, a do-gooder like him, but now things had changed. Now he had Charley happy when it should have been me.

Destiny raised his eyebrows my way, but I pointedly ignored the unasked question, clutching the plastic handle of my spork harder. I was surprised the weak thing didn’t snap. Then Destiny had the balls to turn to Charley, fluttering his long eyelashes at him so damn innocently, and I knew what was coming. “Who blew your whistle, sweetheart?”

Charley’s attention jumped to Destiny, his eyes wide and mouth parted. It took him a moment before the pink flush already painting his cheeks deepened.
