Through a migration systems approach we are better able to explore a variety of non-orthodox or novel migration phenomena ranging from transnationalism to lifestyle migration. With the former, for example, the movement of people with a point of departure and arrival is complicated as an ongoing movement between multiple sites (Vertovec, 1999). This again returns us to the globalised nature of transportation in a way that also reflects advances in accessible communication technologies that are able to sustain these relationships. The latter meanwhile is different still, and reflects both the globalised and differentiated patterns of migration in so far as the impulse for movement remains a different way of living but is pursued by relatively affluent and empowered actors (O’Reilly and Benson, 2009). The latter highlights a persistent tendency that is yet to be satisfactorily addressed. This is ‘a fundamental contradiction between the notion that emigration is widely regarded as a matter of human rights while immigration is regarded as a matter of national sovereignty’ (Weiner, 1996: 171). For these reasons then the study of migration has to be alive to a series of social phenomena that are not easily explained by a singular theory or approach. Moreover, as the discussion of racialisation shows, there is a very real danger that the attempts by political actors to sound tough on migrants and migration feeds off and into a wider negative climate for visible minorities.
