Six weeks passed, and Ollie still hadn’t heard from Karidon. No one would tell him where the man was. Ollie had badgered Coop day and night, but all Coop would say was that Karidon was getting the help he needed.
After Talyn and Syn had taken Karidon, Coop had told Ollie about Karidon’s upbringing. Ollie had been horrified that a parent could do such horrendous things to their own child. Ollie had already known about the accident with Bryson, the omega. He had lived in Riverside, and everyone had heard the news when it happened.
He just hadn’t known it had been Karidon behind the wheel.
The man had been through so much. No wonder he woke with nightmares. Ollie felt like shit for pushing himself on Karidon when it had been obvious that Karidon was going through a rough time.
He shelved the books he had on his cart and sighed heavily. What he wouldn’t give to see the man’s face or hear his voice. Ollie had barely slept or eaten in six weeks. He tossed and turned half the night, wondering if Karidon was okay. He’d dropped two pants sizes—weight he couldn’t afford to lose.
When lunch rolled around, Ollie opted to read instead of eat the lunch Aunt Mya had packed for him. Coop had given him a ride to and from work every day, regardless of what time he’d come home from his own shift.
Olin was being super pleasant to him, and it grated on Ollie’s nerves. He liked his brother razzing him, but Olin hadn’t jerked his chain since Karidon had left.
When he got home that evening, he found Aunt Mya sitting in the kitchen, a tissue to her nose. Her eyes were bloodshot. She was crying. Ollie wasn’t sure what was wrong. He stepped into the kitchen and sat beside her.
“Why are you crying?” he asked. “Tell me what has you so upset.”
She dabbed at her swollen eyes and gazed up at him. “Fester passed away a few hours ago.”
Ollie was thunderstruck. He sat there numbly, gazing past his aunt to the window. Memories flooded him of growing up with his uncle—of the day Fester had moved in after he’d lost his wife, how broken he had been. But with Aunt Mya’s love, he’d slowly mended. Somewhat. He’d drowned his sorrows in alcohol, just like Karidon, but he had no longer walked around like a zombie.
His family was fucked up. His life was fucked up. Ollie wasn’t sure how much more of this he could take before he finally broke.
Tears began to roll down his cheeks as he stood, opened the back door, and ran. He ran blocks, miles, into woods and then into an open field. His lungs burned, and the tears flowed as he ran until his legs couldn’t hold him up any longer. He collapsed and then shifted into his leopard form before he balled up, whimpering as the pain overwhelmed him.
He’d been so busy worrying about Karidon that he hadn’t visited his uncle in weeks.
