Chapter 5

Social Rejection: Causes and Explanations

The attitude of society towards polyamory is not always positive. There are many prejudices about polyamorous relationships, and one of the most common is that they are based solely on sex.

The fact of having several partners at the same time is often associated with a dissolute lifestyle. Any problems that have arisen in a monogamous family — poor school performance of children at school, illness, financial troubles, and addictions, — society will perceive ambivalently: some will sympathize, and some will try to find an excuse to put the blame. And if polyamorist people face the same problems, most people from the same society will attribute all the problems to one, main reason — in their opinion, is non-monogamy!

Polyamoria is subjected to strong stigmatization - to some extent stronger than any gender, race, class, religion, political attitude or sexual orientation. Conservative and religious people are especially hostile towards polyamory. The political status of polyamory is comparable to the status of homosexuality before the Stonewall riots in 1969, which marked the beginning of the gay rights movement [20]

It is important to keep in mind that the societies that managed to become major technological civilizations were those that adopted monogamous marriage as the gold standard for long-term pairing and family formation.

Of course, married people often had affairs, men visited prostitutes, and elites were often polygynous or polyamorous even when they propagated monogamy in public. But monogamy has historically and normatively been central to complex societies.

Monogamy has reduced the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) that can undermine the fertility of women. However, STDs have become much less common over the past few centuries. STDs are now easier to avoid with vaccines, condoms, and safer sex, and they are easier to treat with drugs developed in 20th century.

Perhaps most importantly, monogamy has reduced the ability of men with high status to monopolize women and helped equalize mating opportunities. This has reduced violent competition among men.

Why are polyamorous families worse? Perhaps the future lies with them? The truth is that it will be difficult to legalize polyamorous marriages, partly because there are many varieties of polyamorous relationships. All polyamorous families are different.

On the other hand, it would seem that there are no obstacles to the official registration of polyamorous marriages in the event that all partners live under one roof and have no additional relations on the side.

How can this be done? Parental obligations and ownership rights to real estate may be determined by law. In addition, biological kinship between those who marry and the children they will raise can be taken into account.

Of course, difficulties cannot be avoided, but they are largely similar to the challenges faced by those who want to adopt a child. The situation may be complicated by relations on the side, however, there are similar legal solutions for divorce and custody of children.

The main problem for polyamors today is the lack of legal protection - for example, the absence of laws that prevent discrimination.

For example,
