Skylar sat in the front row of his class and noticed Justice standing in the back, keeping an eye on everyone. He couldn’t concentrate for shit. His cell phone vibrated and Skylar looked at the screen.

Need help. N

He looked over his shoulder, making sure Justice wasn’t watching him, and typed back.

Where are you?

Old place.

I’m coming.

Skylar coughed quietly and got the teacher’s attention. He pointed to the hall and got a nod. Rising from his seat, he waved Justice off and exited the class. He’d only have seconds before Justice followed him out.

Skylar made a run for the restrooms and closed the door. He didn’t want to show up with someone at his side, it might freak Nate out and he’d run. He hadn’t talked with Nate in over a week, and this was the first time Nate had initiated the contact. Skylar unlocked the window and crawled through the small space. He landed on his feet and ran.

The Seattle sun was setting as Skylar pulled the car to the curb across the street from the homeless shelter. The streetlights were just coming on as Skylar jogged across the street. The center was filled to capacity. He looked around the room for Nate, but didn’t see him. He took the stairs to the bathroom upstairs and glanced around. No feet under the stall doors, or anyone on the floor. Heading back downstairs, Skylar combed the place for Nate.

He opened the back door and looked around the backyard. The fence closing them off from the alley was cracked open. Skylar approached carefully, honed in on any sounds around him. Soft sobbing came from the other side of the fence, followed by the sound of retching. Skylar ran for the gate and pushed it open. Nate was on his side, throwing up; his face was a mess of blood and spittle. Skylar dropped to his knees.

“Nate!”

“Skylar…help me…”

Skylar helped Nate to his feet and that’s when he noticed his arms. Track marks were obvious.

“Oh God, what did you do?” Skylar whispered.

“She said it would help,” Nate mumbled.

Nate’s body went limp in his arms and Skylar felt for a pulse. It was faint, but it was there. Skylar threw Nate over his shoulder and ran for his car. He couldn’t bring the cops here; the kids would never come back. Skylar floored it to the hospital and started shouting the minute he walked through the emergency room doors.

“Help!”

Two nurses and a doctor ran to him, and began peppering him with question. He did his best to answer as they started working on Nate. Skylar sat in the waiting room and covered his face with his hands. His phone chimed and he checked the caller ID. Unavailable.

“Hello?”

“How many more of your friends have to suffer, Skylar? Was Danny’s death not enough? Was the bomb not enough? One of these times, I’ll get to someone you really do care about.”

“What?” he whispered.

“Corner of Prospect and 11th street. Half hour, Skylar. Don’t be late.”

“I…can’t…”

“You can and you will, or Nate will die of a heroin overdose.
