Chapter 15
The drive home from Weintraube was brutal. They hadnât been on the road for more than fifteen minutes when Tater made a god-awful hacking sound and then puked all over the passenger seat of Shelbyâs truck. The smell permeated the entire gap and nearly caused Shelby to gag too.
He quickly pulled off on the side of the road to try and clean up the mess as best as he could, so Tater didnât make a bigger mess, but he quickly learned that effort was futile. The poor dog threw up four more times before they made it home, and that didnât count what was coming out the other end.
As soon as he pulled into his driveway, he got Tater out of the truck. Then he called Danielle damn near in a panic.
âHey. How was Sunday dinner?â she answered his call cheerfully.
âTaterâs sick,â he replied as they stepped in the house, and he filled Taterâs water bowl.
âHuh? Are you home?â
âIn the car, we were driving back, and he started puking and shitting all in my truck. Weâre home now. What do I do? Should I call the vet? Thatâs a stupid question. I should have called the vet. Oh, God. Danielle, what if heâs got Parvo?â
âAlright big guy. Relax and take a deep breath for me. Itâs probably not Parvo. He would have been showing symptoms by now. Did he eat something he shouldnât have?â
Shelby wracked his brain for a moment. âShit. I think my dipshit little brother fed him spaghetti and garlic bread. I think the fucker shared some damn macadamia nut cookies with him too.â
âAh. That probably did it. Will he drink water for you?â
âHe drank it then spit it all back up.â
âWhy donât we give the vet a call just to be on the safe side? Iâll call Dr. Anderson and call you back. Okay?â
âYeah. That works. Thank you.â
âYouâre welcome. Seriously. Try to relax. Iâm sure itâs just an upset tummy.â
Shelby nodded, even though she couldnât see him and hung up the phone. While he waited for her to call back, he put Tater in the back yard and went out front to his truck and attempted to clean up what he could. Tomorrow heâd have to make an appointment to have it detailed and treated.
No more than ten minutes passed before Danielle called him back.
âHey. So, Dr. Anderson said go ahead and bring him in so he can run some blood work and maybe give him some IV fluids. He wants to make sure itâs not a blockage or anything. Do not freak out, okay? He said he thinks it could just be what he ate too, but better safe than sorry.â
âYeah. Sure. Just go, right now?â
âYup. Heâs going to meet you there. You have the address to his office, right?â
âI do. Iâll put it in the GPS,â he sighed.
âDo you want me to come with you?â
âWould you?â
âOf course, silly. I wouldnât have offered otherwise. Iâm already in my car. Iâll be at your house in ten minutes, we can ride together, and I can keep an eye on Tater while you drive.
