Chapter 15

The drive home from Weintraube was brutal. They hadn’t been on the road for more than fifteen minutes when Tater made a god-awful hacking sound and then puked all over the passenger seat of Shelby’s truck. The smell permeated the entire gap and nearly caused Shelby to gag too.

He quickly pulled off on the side of the road to try and clean up the mess as best as he could, so Tater didn’t make a bigger mess, but he quickly learned that effort was futile. The poor dog threw up four more times before they made it home, and that didn’t count what was coming out the other end.

As soon as he pulled into his driveway, he got Tater out of the truck. Then he called Danielle damn near in a panic.

“Hey. How was Sunday dinner?” she answered his call cheerfully.

“Tater’s sick,” he replied as they stepped in the house, and he filled Tater’s water bowl.

“Huh? Are you home?”

“In the car, we were driving back, and he started puking and shitting all in my truck. We’re home now. What do I do? Should I call the vet? That’s a stupid question. I should have called the vet. Oh, God. Danielle, what if he’s got Parvo?”

“Alright big guy. Relax and take a deep breath for me. It’s probably not Parvo. He would have been showing symptoms by now. Did he eat something he shouldn’t have?”

Shelby wracked his brain for a moment. “Shit. I think my dipshit little brother fed him spaghetti and garlic bread. I think the fucker shared some damn macadamia nut cookies with him too.”

“Ah. That probably did it. Will he drink water for you?”

“He drank it then spit it all back up.”

“Why don’t we give the vet a call just to be on the safe side? I’ll call Dr. Anderson and call you back. Okay?”

“Yeah. That works. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Seriously. Try to relax. I’m sure it’s just an upset tummy.”

Shelby nodded, even though she couldn’t see him and hung up the phone. While he waited for her to call back, he put Tater in the back yard and went out front to his truck and attempted to clean up what he could. Tomorrow he’d have to make an appointment to have it detailed and treated.

No more than ten minutes passed before Danielle called him back.

“Hey. So, Dr. Anderson said go ahead and bring him in so he can run some blood work and maybe give him some IV fluids. He wants to make sure it’s not a blockage or anything. Do not freak out, okay? He said he thinks it could just be what he ate too, but better safe than sorry.”

“Yeah. Sure. Just go, right now?”

“Yup. He’s going to meet you there. You have the address to his office, right?”

“I do. I’ll put it in the GPS,” he sighed.

“Do you want me to come with you?”

“Would you?”

“Of course, silly. I wouldn’t have offered otherwise. I’m already in my car. I’ll be at your house in ten minutes, we can ride together, and I can keep an eye on Tater while you drive.
