Kris loved waking up next to Jessie the next morning. It was Sunday and normally the entire family would go to church together. Not today. He wanted to spend some time getting to know Jessie better. Kris showered, put on some comfortable clothing and went downstairs to fix breakfast. He heard the water running in the bathroom about thirty minutes later. Jessie joined him, smiling, freshly washed with damp silky hair. He wore a pair of jogging pants and a black T-shirt.
“You cook?”
Kris nodded. “I had to learn to do a lot of things on my own when I left home.”
“Me too.”
“I know you lost your parents and you went into foster care for a while. Was it bad?”
“Not really. My foster parents took real good care of me and your mother was nice to me when we worked together.”
“Does she know you’re gay?”
Jessie nodded. “From the start. I guessed you paved the way so she knew what to expect.”
Kris finished cooking, filled the plates with eggs, bacon and toast. “Do you drink coffee?”
“Yes, who doesn’t? Students at the university keep the local coffee shop in business.” Jessie got up, found and rinsed two coffee mugs, then poured for them. There was condiments and powdered creamer on the table. Kris dished up the food, then they sat down. Jessie said grace before starting in on his eggs.
“Move in with me.”
Jessie nearly choked on his food. “What? Why?”
“I want you to move in with me because I like waking up next to you in the morning.”
“But I have my own place and we just met. And I can fart in my apartment and scratch inappropriate places when I’m alone.”
Kris chuckled sarcastically. “Dude, I’m a dude too. You can still do man stuff here. You can have your own room and you won’t have to pay rent.”
Jessie stopped chewing. “No rent? I couldn’t just live off of you like some kept woman.”
Their first argument. “The condo is already paid for. The utilities automatically come out of my retirement check, and you wouldn’t be treated like a woman, unless that’s your thing.”
Jessie frowned at him. “No, I should still pay my way. Let me buy the food at least and we can share the cooking.”
Kris smiled. It was as simple as that. There were going to be cohabitating lovers.
Jessie went back to eating. “Can we get a tree?”
“Yes.”
“I’m catholic and I go to mass when I can,” Jessie said.
“Me too.”
“I have been known to break out in song and dance in supermarkets while enjoying the canned in music.”
Kris was loving every minute of this conversation. Jessie was just as kooky as him. That’s why he knew they would be perfect together. “I can handle that. I like to watch sports, all sports, to include wrestling and boxing.”
Jessie made a face. “I like gymnastics and ice skating.”
Kris sneered. “I can handle that. They’re only on every four years. What else have you got?”
“Carl, Emmerson and I like to hang out sometimes. We go dancing.”
“And I’ll be right there to chaperone.
