After we’d ordered another round of drinks, I asked Steve what had drawn him to India.

“The chance to do good in the world,” he said. “To change lives.”

“I would love to do something like that one day,” I said. “To help people. Especially kids.” As I said the words, it suddenly struck me that this might be the answer to the niggling emptiness I’d been feeling for so long. Not men, not money, not filling myself up with things or the high of being desired. No, maybe the solution was in helping others, getting outside of myself. Steve was doing it, and it had saved him. Maybe it could save me, too.

“I admire what you’re doing,” I said. “It must be such a good feeling.”

“So why don’t you do it, too?” he asked.

That question, so simple, struck a nerve in me. Yes, why didn’t I? Life really was that simple. A choice could be made in an instant.

But I had obligations. A life I’d committed to. A contract I was signing tomorrow. A path I was on. An exciting, fun path at that.

“Maybe someday,” I said, taking a sip of my Mai Tai. “When I have more time.”

“Why not now?” He studied me. “Unless there’s something else holding you back. Or someone.”

“No someone. It’s just that I have a good job. One that won’t come along again.”

A shadow passed across his face. “I almost forgot what you did for a living.”

“It didn’t seem to bother you before.”

“It doesn’t. Not really. I’m not the judgmental type. If it makes you happy, then all the more power to you.” He paused. “But I’m curious. Why do you do it?”

“The money.”

“I don’t believe that.”

I stared at him. “What don’t you believe?”

“I find it impossible to believe you’re motivated by money. In fact, during the short time we’ve gotten to know each other, I can say unequivocally that I’ve never met a woman who seems less motivated by money.”

“Seriously?” I asked. I liked to think that he was right, of course, but I hadn’t realized it was that obvious. No, it wasn’t really the money at Matchscort that motivated me, although I wouldn’t turn it down. It was so much more than that.

“Most women would have encouraged me to appease my mother. For the trust fund.” He met my eyes. “So if it isn’t the money, what keeps you at your job?”

“Travel.”

“You can do that on your own.”

“Okay, excitement. I want to live an exciting life.”

“You don’t need the agency for that. You can find excitement anywhere.”

I’ll say. As I looked into his striking blue eyes, a trickle of desire crawled through my belly. He ignited something fierce in me, something that made me want to spend my days making love to him . . . and eternity in his arms.

“So what is it?” he pressed. “Why do you stay there when you could do . . . so much more?”

Ire flared up in me. “Like what? Work at a bank or some regular job? I did that before, and I was miserable.
