When Sterling’s private Lear jet landed in Paris, I was exhausted but giddy. We had spent the entire flight drinking expensive champagne, relaxing, joking, and watching movies. It was the best vacation I’d ever had, and we hadn’t even left the plane yet.
The long plane ride had also given me a chance to get to know this elusive, mysterious man who owned some of the biggest hotels in the world. We’d talked for hours, and I’d learned that he’d never been married, despite having dated many women who would have given anything to become Mrs. Sterling Edwards.
“Why haven’t you found the right woman?” I asked, feeding him a chocolate-covered strawberry as the plane bounced gently through the night sky.
He shrugged. “Haven’t met her yet. Don’t know if I ever will. There is too much emotional drama that happens each time I refuse to commit to a woman.”
“Is that why you turned to the agency?”
“Yes. Also, my sexual tastes tend to turn some women off. I wanted to be able to dominate freely without being made to feel ashamed of it.”
“Some women made you feel ashamed?” I was surprised to hear this. Sterling Edwards didn’t seem like the type of man who ever let anyone dictate his emotions.
He put his glass down. “The woman I was with the longest, someone I got engaged to in my twenties, told me I was sick. ‘A sick fuck,’ was how she put it, during one of our arguments.” He ran a hand through his hair. “Needless to say, it didn’t bode well for our future together.”
I swallowed. “I’m sorry you had to go through that.”
“No biggie. She didn’t know why I liked—no, needed—to feel in control. If she had, it might have made things clearer for her. Then she might not have judged.”
I cleared my throat. “So why do need to dominate?”
His jaw clenched. “It’s no one’s business. I’ve never told anyone my history. And I never will.”
“Okay.” A long moment of silence passed before I spoke again. “It doesn’t matter what your history is. Everyone should be allowed to be themselves without shame. If someone doesn’t like who you are, then they should just move along. There are enough people in the world to match tastes without having to demoralize someone.” I paused, remembering my own history. “My ex-boyfriend . . . he was a med student. We’d been together for years. I thought we were going to get married. But he never missed an opportunity to make me feel bad about my weight. Called me pear shaped.”
Sterling leaned over and stroked my cheek. “Bastard. He didn’t know what he was missing. You’re beautiful. I love your curves. Every single one of them.” He ran his hand over my thigh.
“I’m glad.” I snuggled into the crook of his arm. “But see, we like and accept each other for who we are.”
“I wouldn’t be so quick to say that, if I were you. You haven’t experienced the full impact of my needs yet.
