Chapter 9

“Occupancy rates in the southeast region are up by nineteen point five percent over last year’s numbers. With the capital costs factored into the margins, the net contribution numbers are…”

Jenna didn’t hear any of it. She sat at the head of the table, tapping her pen against the leather notebook, not even seeing the other people in the room. Her thoughts were completely focused on Zahir. What was he doing right now? Was he in a meeting, like her? Was he considering buying another business? Or was he with…? She stopped that question in her mind immediately. Jenna didn’t want to think about Zahir with another woman. She hated the thought of him touching someone else, but Jenna also knew that she didn’t have a claim to his time. They’d never promised each other monogamy. How could they? They lived in different worlds!

He was a businessman who thrived on the challenge of business and she…she was a businesswoman in charge of an international hotel chain! Their lives were completely separate. Yes, they could meet up and enjoy each other’s company when their schedules aligned. But beyond that, there was no way that they could truly be together.

“Ms. Halliday?” someone called out, interrupting the negative spiral of her thoughts.

“Yes?”

Jenna focused her attention on the other people sitting around the conference room table. Everyone was staring at her. She glanced down at the report in front of her, but none of the numbers made sense.

“Yes, right.” Jenna sighed, rubbed her forehead with her thumb and forefinger, then closed her leather notebook. “I’ll get back to everyone with action items.” She stood up and nodded. “Thank you.”

Jenna wondered how much she’d missed while thinking about Zahir. That was another reason to put him out of her mind. He was distracting her. She had to concentrate. It wasn’t fair to others that she wasn’t paying attention in meetings. It was her job! She needed the information those employees provided so that she could make decisions going forward.

Walking into her office, she tossed her notebook on to her desk but she didn’t sit down. Instead, she walked over to the window, gazing out at the grey morning. Or was it afternoon? She was losing track of time, as well as her mind!

“Are you okay?”

Jenna turned, pasting on a smile automatically as she did so. Ava smiled welcomingly as she entered the office. Today, Jenna’s sister was wearing a red sheath dress, a relatively normal dress, but Ava had added neon pink stiletto shoes and a sparkling, faux gem necklace with matching earrings. On Jenna, that outfit would look ridiculous. Or maybe Jenna would just feel ridiculous. But Ava looked fabulous! The woman was brilliant with colors and had an attitude that screamed, “Yeah? You don’t like it? Tough!”

“You look beautiful, Ava,” Jenna blurted without thinking.

Instantly, Ava stopped, glancing down at her outfit as if she’d forgotten what she was wearing. “You like it? You don’t think the colors clash?”

Jenna laughed, gesturing towards the small sitting area to the left of her desk.
