Chapter 8

* * *

Trombone

The trombone is somewhat of an awkward instrument to play, unless you have consummate facility with it. The instrument promotes a range of very different, very distinctive sounds—and I have found most trombonists have a certain distinctiveness about themselves as well.

Guys like Phil Wilson, who used to be with Woody’s band, made a name for themselves on trombone. In those days, nobody played the trombone like Phil did. He, in turn, was influenced by Vic Dickenson, a trombonist from another, earlier era, who played with Count Basie. But Phil turned the trombone into a very personal, different instrument. Phil was in Woody’s band on the Live at Lake Tahoe album and, with his trombone, he created a sound you’ll never forget … a big, swooping sound unlike any other.

When I think of today’s trombonists, Robin Eubanks immediately comes to mind.
