THIRTY-EIGHT

One second, I feel like Jase and I are on the verge of something and the next, he’s practically dragging me into the bedroom, barking at me to get dressed. Telling me we have to leave, right now.

“What happened?” I ask while I pull on a pair of jeans under my sweatshirt. “Jase, what’s going on? Who was that on the—”

“Angel—he works security for the clubs with Gray,” he tells me, dropping the towel slung around his waist without an ounce of hesitation, making his urgency apparent. “Something happened to Taylor last night.”

Taylor.

The woman I met in the lobby yesterday.

The woman he’d been sleeping with before I barged my way back into his life.

When he says her name, his jaw tightens. Turning away from me, he pulls on a pair of boxer briefs before threading his legs into a pair of jeans. “She was attacked after her shift last night—she’s in surgery. He says it’s bad.”

Surgery.

She was attacked. Hurt so badly that she needs surgery.

Before I wrap my head around it, Jase sighs. “Look—” Snapping up a random T-shirt, he pulls it on before turning around to face me again. “maybe you should stay here,” he tells me, running a quick, rough hand over the top of his head. “I’ll be back as soon as I—”

“No,” I tell him, shaking my head while I slide my feet into a pair of ballet flats. “I’m coming with you.”

He stares at me for another moment, jaw clenched like he’s trying to decide if it’s worth the time it’ll take to fight me on it. Deciding it isn’t, he gives me a single, terse nod. “Okay,” he says, grabbing his own shoes on his way out the door. “Let’s go.”
