Conclusion

The first part of this chapter examined the way in which Japanese AVs are circulated in Taiwan as VCDs and internet files. We concluded that technological advance has segregated Taiwanese users into two groups: those younger, better-educated people who are technologically equipped tend to get access to Japanese AVs through the internet, while those older, less educated people who are not so equipped resort to VCDs. More crucially, such segregation in turn gave rise to the circulation of AVs as ‘gifts’ between members of the two groups.

The second part then explored how the circulation of Japanese AVs between the two groups took place. It examined two ethnographic accounts in which informants applied AV-giving to good use, thereby allowing them to achieve something which was otherwise impossible. Three points can be made here.

First, the circulation of Japanese AVs in Taiwan is highlighted by a gender bias, wherein women are not considered a relevant party. This gender bias explains, as we shall see in Chapter 6, why women’s use of Japanese AVs is always mediated by their men.

Second, Michael and Lori initiated guanxi with others with a practical gift-giving, but in the process of maintaining this guanxi, they changed their perception of their friendship from an instrumental to affective one in which gifts are given out to maintain bonding as well as to express gratitude. The cases of Michael and Lori constitute a challenge to the dichotomy of expressive friend-ship and instrumental guanxi which has long persisted in the literature on Chinese interpersonal relationships.

Finally, and most crucially, while Japanese AV is originally a commercial product across the strait, it takes on rather different meanings in Taiwan. When Japanese AVs are established in Taiwan, the way they are circulated is mediated by the Chinese ways of strategizing friendship: guanxi, renqing, and mianzi. That is to say, Japanese AVs are now circulated in the same way as Chinese gifts are given out and received in Taiwanese society. It is in this sense that Japanese AVs become a Chinese gift used in baituo in Taiwan.

This culturally mediated mode of AV-circulation as a Chinese gift further implies the ever-increasing participation of local agency. This sense of local agency will be much more obvious when considering their consumption patterns in which tastes are often shaped by the sexual being and sexual script of Taiwanese men and women, an important topic to which we will move onto in Chapter 6.
