“I’ve thought about getting married all my life. And now that it’s here, I’m less than excited.” The slight tug that she felt from Royal on the other end of the stick felt playful yet so very calming.
“Then take some time to find out why. It may be just nerves.”
“I don’t think I have time.”
“Why’s that?”
“I’m already in trouble for staying here. When I get home, my family will put even more pressure on me to walk down the aisle. My mom thinks I stepped off the plane here in Vegas and went bonkers.”
“There’s more to life than doing what people expect. If you’re in doubt or if you need a little more time, you should take it. Explore your own dreams and listen to yourself. I would never have gotten anywhere if I’d listened to everyone who told me I couldn’t open a business. I didn’t listen to the ones who tried to tell me what they thought I should do.”
“These foggy dreams are just that, though. Foggy. Sometimes they seem like someone else’s because I can’t quite get them into focus. Maybe I’m afraid to see exactly what they are. If I do, I might have to make huge changes. And that would upset everyone at home.”
Royal pulled her end of the stick until Jane’s hand was resting on Royal’s knee. Royal let go of her end and placed her hand over Jane’s. “Living your own life means that taking risks is the most important thing of all. Sometimes it’s more important than the outcome.”
Royal waved her other hand across the expanse of the desert around them. “Las Vegas exists because of risks. And it’s full of casinos that are there for the risk-taker in all of us. This is the perfect place to ask yourself the questions that are coming up now. Who am I? What do I want? And that’s beautiful because you’re trying new things. You took a risk by coming out here alone. You did that. For you. And you stepped out of your comfort zone. Risking doing something new and even scary was more important than what happened in the alley. I hope that’s what you’ll remember long after your scars heal.”
Right now, Jane would remember Royal’s hand on hers. Having such a strong woman give her so much interest and consideration was incredible. She liked the attention a hundred times more than what she got from Charles. Maybe it was because she was far away from her family. Or maybe just being close to Royal made her feel such unbelievable excitement inside.
She placed her other hand over Royal’s and felt warmed by the smile that washed over this amazing woman’s face.
“You’ll be okay,” Royal said.
“I believe you.” A rush of strong, sexual feelings swept through her. She swore she could feel Royal’s blood pulsing against her hand and almost swayed in its rhythm.
Royal slightly shook her head, then slowly removed her hand from the stick and from Jane.
“What about college?”
“What?” Jane had
