Chapter 5

“What are you doing so far away from home, Antoine?” Jack asked, wanting to somehow rope the driver into conversation. After all, he was an outsider here, and the journey to the inn might take a while.

The black chat glanced over his shoulder. “I’ve got eleven kids to support, and they’re all under fifteen. Not much work prospects out there in Bonnes, right Roux?”

How well do these two know each other?

Roux groaned, watching the sea to their right. “The scenery is nice.”

Eleven? Eleven? Jack kept his shock to himself and went the polite route. After all, the past years had taught him that many problems between species could be avoided if everyone remained civil. “That must be tough on Mrs. Antoine. Taking care of them all.”

Antoine waved his paw dismissively. “Nah, they roam around a lot. It’s what’s nice about the countryside.”

Jack laughed. “I wish I could have roamed around at that age. What about you, Roux?”

Roux made little whimper. “I was busy studying.”

Antoine snorted. “Studying the local studs.”

“I refuse to acknowledge that accusation!”

“Just calling a spade a spade. Can’t fake the way you smell.”

Jack looked between the two chats, his head still ringing with the bit about studying studs. That sounded just like him. “What’s wrong with the way he smells?”

Roux hissed. “Nothing.”

“Oui, nothing is exactly wrong with it. It’s more that… at certain times of the year, he smells like a girl.”

“Antoine, shut your face, or I will throw you off there and drive this carriage myself! I was eager to leave Bonnes because of chats like you.”

Jack wanted to chip in, because Roux was clearly upset by the notion. Jack guessed he’d be too if someone accused him of using floral perfumes. “That’s right, he smells nothing like a girl. He has this clean scent to his fur!”

Roux’s head whipped right back to Jack with his lips parted, but Antoine kept talking.

“You’re human, you wouldn’t know. But as far as I recall, Roux left Bonnes because he was the twentieth kid in his family, and his brothers aren’t exactly doing much to help out. Hasn’t your sister had three more babies this past summer?”

Jack was embarrassed. For himself, for Antoine, and most of all for Roux. He’d prided himself on representing the best in chats, and now here they were, talking about how his family was a chat stereotype.

“Oh, you have nephews? Congratulations,” he said, gently nudging Roux with his elbow.

Roux sighed deeply, and his ears lowered. “Thank you. I’m planning to visit them next year.”

Antoine seemed to be enjoying the torment too much to stop. “By then you might have more, because Jeanne had her first heat a few months back. Then again, I’ve heard she’s made some human friends, so you might be safe.”

Roux’s feet tapped the floor, his shoulders hunched. Jack had enough of this. “Dude, what’s your problem?”

Antoine’s tail twitched. “We’re just having a conversation.”

Jack frowned. “No. You’re talking about someone else’s business. What’s the point of this?”

Antoine looked back with his eyelids lowered.
