I coughed out a laugh and Cece sneered at me. I tucked my phone away and pinched Sloane again.

“Okay, stop. You’re going to leave a mark.” She plopped her Samsung back into her minaudière and pinched me back.

“Ow!” I exclaimed.

“Yeah, see? It hurts.”

“You two are like toddlers.” Cece rolled her eyes at us, fixing her enormous hair.

Sloane and I beamed back at her and Holden chuckled from the front seat.

The car steered to a stop in front of the church and the driver and Holden got out to open our doors.

Cece scrambled out and tried to grab Holden’s arm. “Escort me inside?” she asked in a high-pitched voice, pressing her huge fake tits against his arm.

“I already have someone to escort, Cece.” His voice dripped with sheer annoyance and he took my hand, helping me out of the car.

She harrumphed and flounced away, her heels scraping on the sidewalk as she went.

“Do you think Ava will be pissed if Cece has a black eye in all the pictures tomorrow?” Sloane asked.

“Whatever. She has makeup. She can cover it up,” I offered.

Holden took my hand in his, bonding us together once again, and we headed toward the church. Ava and Reed were standing outside, talking heatedly about something, and Ava had tears in her eyes.

“Hey, Ave. You all right?” Sloane tried as we walked up.

“The wedding is off!” she screeched and ran into the church.

“Fuck.” Reed scraped his hands down his face.

“What happened?” Holden asked him.

“No fucking idea. My mom said something about the flowers and Ava lost her shit. Then she got mad at me because I didn’t lose my shit. She’s wound so fucking tight she’s gonna explode,” Reed told us.

“It’s a lot of stress. And you know Ava. She wants it all to be perfect.”

“Yeah, it will be. And if it’s not, who gives a fuck? It’s just a wedding.” Reed shrugged.

“Oh, god. I hope you didn’t say that to her,” Sloane groaned at him.

He gazed at her blankly. Yeah, he said that to her.

“Reed, this is Ava’s big day. This is supposed to be the happiest day of her life. And you know she wants it to be for you, too,” I said, my tone measured.

He stared at me. “What the fuck does that have to do with the flowers being wrong?”

“I’ll talk to her. Just do her a favor? Tell your mom not to mention it again. Or anything else. Gently. One less thing for Ava to worry about.” I patted his arm.

He nodded and I turned to go find Ava. “Gotta go,” I told Holden.

Holden nodded, his eyes on me. I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and Sloane and I hurried off.
