Chapter Twelve

“We’ve got company.” Brandon’s clipped voice announced. "Got word two suspects entered the front lobby five minutes ago. Probably headed for the suite. Smart move changing the rooms. I’m approaching the parking garage. ETA two minutes. Will wait near the designated exit door.”

Hayley looked over to see her clothes laid out on the other bed.

“You believe in being prepared,” she commented as they dressed.

“Old habits.”

They stuffed their evening clothes in their backpacks, threw them over their shoulders. Liam checked his Glock, tucked it in his jeans at the small of his back under his shirt and handed her a Red Sox baseball cap before heading for the door.

Hayley twirled her hair into the hat while Liam opened the door, checked the hall, found it empty.

With catlike speed, the moved past the doors to the two rooms between them and the exit, raced down the stairs toward the parking garage.

“When we go out to the SUV, I’ll open the back door, you dive in. I’ll jump in front. Stay low until we’re out of the building. They apparently have someone watching the front of the hotel.”

Liam eyeballed the switch on the wall beside the exit door; nudged it down to put the stairwell and their corner of the garage in darkness. He opened the door, sprinted over to the SUV, opened both passenger doors.

Hayley jumped inside, heard Murdock’s greeting yip, reached over the seat to pet him, encouraged him to lay quiet.

Brandon navigated the vehicle around the interior row of cars, followed the exit signs painted on the pavement out of the parking garage.

Liam kept his hat pulled low, canvased for anything out of the ordinary. There was little traffic at this early hour, but he detected shadows in a vehicle parked on the street within sight of the hotel. They kept a close watch for any vehicles following as they maneuvered past the hotel, toward the interstate.

“You’re sure they were Ortiz’s men?”

“Positive. Two came in around midnight. Asked questions at the front desk. Sat in different corners of the lobby. Then two more came in thirty minutes ago. They had a little chitchat before those two went to the elevators. Guess they’ve discovered the suite is empty by now.”

“How did they find out we were here?” Hayley inquired. She reached back to brush Murdock’s head through the bars of his crate while Liam and Brandon exchanged silent looks.

“I want to know how the old man is funding all this,” Liam grumbled.

“He hasn’t had many visitors,” Brandon commented. “I checked the prison logs after the Hughes murder.”

Brandon pulled up beside Liam’s truck still parked where they’d left it. “It’s clean but considering they’ve discovered you’re here, it doesn’t hurt to check it again.”

After verifying his truck was free of tracking devices and bombs, Liam okayed Hayley and Murdock switching vehicles.

“Take care of my father,” Hayley called out to Brandon before shutting her door. After quick goodbyes, everyone was on their way.
