CHAPTER ELEVEN

Nora found blankets and an extra pillow in Miles’s closet and spread them on the couch. She had no right to sleep in his bed, to want him to hold her, to lust after her sister’s husband. Grief consumed her, the thought of returning to Nighthawk Island sending a tremor through her.

“What are you doing?”

Miles moved away from the computer and massaged his neck. His gaze slid over her, then back to her eyes, and a muscle ticked in his jaw. She’d changed into that damn nightshirt again, and he wished she had flannel pajamas instead.

“I’m sleeping out here tonight, Miles. I don’t expect you to give up your bed for me.” Although she desperately wanted to share it with him.

What kind of woman did that make her? She’d take her sister’s leftovers, let him pretend she was Caitlin if he wanted….

No, she might not have all her memories intact, but she did have pride.

He shook his head. “Take the bed, Nora. I doubt I’ll sleep tonight, anyway.”

“But, Miles—”

“Don’t argue with me,” he snapped. “I intend to study up on that research park. I want to be armed with knowledge when we approach them tomorrow.”

“You do believe I was held there?” she said, aching for his trust.

He probably hated them both, wished he’d never met them.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her voice warbling. “I…as soon as we learn what happened to Caitlin, I’ll get out of your life.”

He worked his mouth from side to side, as if he wanted to say something, but then his eyes darkened with anguish, and he refrained from speaking. She turned and rushed into the bedroom before she collapsed into tears and begged him to love her, at least for the night.

Drained, and exhausted from the day’s ordeal, she stretched out on the bed. Miles’s scent enveloped her, the imprint of his big, hard, strong body had left an impression on the bedding. She rolled to her side and pulled her knees to her chest, then hugged his pillow to her, inhaling his masculine odor and praying for the strength to leave him when the time came for her to do so.

But where would she go?

She had no money…except for her parents’ inheritance, and that would be tied up until all doubts were erased concerning her sister’s death. She had no ID. No home. She’d have to find a job. What had she done for a living? She remembered singing in that bar, but somehow she couldn’t imagine returning to that lifestyle. The thought of performing on stage, of having strange men gawking at her, sent a shiver of apprehension up her spine.

But what else could she do? What skills did
