Nothing had happened at the house where the two Bryson daughters lived.

Nothing. Nada.

It was quiet, with no one coming or going. Brianna wasn’t even sure they were home which instantly made her more suspicious. If they weren’t there, were they in Los Angeles? It was a weekday, however, and Lulu pointed out that they had jobs like most people do. They were probably going to be home at any moment.

The longer she sat there with nothing happening, the sillier she felt about having weapons. This was a normal, suburban street with families and kids and dogs. This wasn’t the shootout at the OK Corral, and she wasn’t Wyatt Earp.

They hadn’t even needed the binoculars because there was nothing to see.

They were all pretty much lulled into a sense of complacency when there was an abrupt knock on the driver’s side window.

Brianna’s heart stopped in her chest, and she almost peed her pants. Lulu let out a yelp, and Henry jumped up in the backseat, hitting his head on the roof of the car.

She was reaching for her gun when she saw the face in the window looking back at her. And none too happy.

Uncle Jared. Jared Monroe. And he was clearly furious.

“Roll down this window right now,” he said, rapping on it again with his knuckles. “Right now, Lulu.”

Brianna had never seen Lulu’s eyes that round. Not even the night when her father had found her marijuana stash in her dresser drawer back in Lulu’s freshman year of high school. She’d been grounded for a month. Brianna had warned her cousin that her dad was a trained cop, and he’d find out about it, but Lulu had been convinced she was a super spy and she’d get away with it.

She was wrong.

“You better roll it down,” Brianna said. “He’s not going to go away.”

“What is he doing here?” Lulu hissed. “He’s not supposed to be here.”

“Maybe we should ask him,” Brianna sighed. “Henry, unlock the door so Jared can get in the car.”

“Is he going to kill me?” Henry asked nervously, glancing at the angry man in the window. “I don’t want to die. I have a bucket list.”

“Jared will only kill Lulu and myself,” Brianna replied. “He doesn’t kill strangers. Please let him in.”

Reluctantly, Henry reached over and unlocked the door. Jared opened it and climbed in, slamming it shut. Loudly.

“Shit, Uncle Jared. Be careful. It’s a rental,” Lulu said. “I didn’t get the extra insurance.”

“Lulu, I’m barely holding onto my temper here,” Jared said, his teeth gritted.

Damn, he’s pissed.

Brianna was currently rethinking every life decision that had led up to her sitting in this car. She’d never seen her uncle this angry. Ever. He wouldn’t do anything rash. She knew him better than that. He’d always been the quiet and controlled one, rarely even letting his emotions show.

He wasn’t bothering to hide them today, though.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded. “Pretend I don’t already know.”

Brianna had been brought up not to back down. Jared was mad, but he wasn’t her daddy.
