Chapter Fourteen

The next morning, Juliette walked beside Matt as they followed Sam along a well-used trail. The sun had barely crested the sky, but the day promised to be a scorcher.

They’d had breakfast with Sam early that morning, and all of them had agreed it was time to move on.

She’d tried to throw her hair in a bun, feeling the humidity calling this morning, but several tendrils had already escaped, both because of the lack of a proper hair tie to keep her hair up and a lack of products.

With such heavy, thick hair, it was only a matter of time before it escaped its confines and ended up as a wild nest for birds around her head.

Meanwhile, Matt looked cool, calm, and collected. He’d braided his hair this morning, then tied it back with a colorful string given to him by one of the sweet young girls back at the tribe. The little girl, no older than ten, had blushed as he smiled in thanks, then proceeded to braid his hair as he ate on. As if it were the most normal thing for him to do—allowing a young child to fuss over him.

It had caused her heart to thump with joy at how easy he was around children. Something she did not need to think about.

Something she failed in thinking and obsessing over.

She shook her thoughts away and refocused on following the men along the trail.

Matt’s long strides kept pace with Sam as if they were taking a leisurely walk to the store and not one through a wild jungle to find a car that had been procured for them in an assist to helping them escape this jungle.

And that was one thing, how much the tribe was helping them. Amazing that this place existed, that these people did. Despite how they’d come to be in this situation, it was a place she wouldn’t forget anytime soon.

Nor would she ever be able to adequately express her gratitude.

There was no way Matt and she would have survived without their help—without their continued help.

And… Her cheeks heated as she took another look at Matt. Last night had changed something between them. Brought them closer than they’d been before. She hoped he felt it too because it was something she couldn’t deny anymore. Her heart had opened toward him, especially after their talk and the kisses from last night.

That was all they’d done, too. Just kiss. But they were so deep and thoroughly done that she didn’t think she’d ever been touched in the same way.

He’d kept to only the kissing, maybe with a few stolen touches here and there. She’d felt him hot, hard, and ready to take her. She’d wanted him so bad, but she respected his wishes and didn’t want to push him to do anything more.

To say she’d been surprised he was a virgin was an understatement. She still couldn’t quite believe it. The man was entirely too good-looking. Too good of a kisser. But he’d been earnest and open about it, so she’d have to trust him at this point.
