Eastern Gujarat

The ‘industrial corridor’ of Gujarat lies due south of Ahmedabad. In its hinterland is the exclusively Adivasi belt, whose rural societies lead very different lives to those in the mercantile centres elsewhere in the state (for more information, click here).

The industrial city of Vadodara ) [map] (formerly Baroda), 115km (70 miles) southeast of Ahmedabad, was capital of one of the richest ‘princely states’ in pre-Independence India. The Old Town has a number of attractions associated with the ruling maharajas, including the once opulent Lakshmi Vilas Palace.

Vadodara serves as a springboard for trips to the deserted Muslim city of Champaner, 45km (28 miles) northeast. A wealth of intricately carved mosques, tombs and gateways bearing exquisite Islamic calligraphy survive from the late 14th century, when the town, then known as Muhammabad, served as the sultan of Gujarat’s capital. Despite being classed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, it sees few visitors and has an almost forlorn feel.
