Delilah had cooked with her heart and over a beer last night. Gunner had mentioned that she had been recreating some of the first dishes sheâd made for him or taught him to make for his mom. And when he said that this morning would be Delilahâs French toast? I made my morning plans, set my alarm earlier than usual, and got my ass down to Castle Rock Inn so I wouldnât miss the first batch of the morning.
It was a few hours before my shift at the firehouse, the last one before our five days in St. Lucia. A few days on the beach sounded just right, but I was most looking forward to spending time with Adeline. Thoughts of Addie in a bikini didnât hurt either.
My stride was long as I walked through the innâs lobby and into the dining area. I scanned the room, looking for a table, and stopped my search when I spotted the woman who invaded all my thoughts, the one Iâd just been picturing in a red string bikini. I suppressed the groan that threatened to break free when the cliche of her in that bikini, walking out of the ocean all wet, popped into my mind. While I would love to see her like that, seeing her in navy plaid pajama pants with a pink bow in the front and a pink T-shirt was just as appealing.
She gasped when I pulled out the chair across from her and sat down. The gasp turned into a groan. âHere to make my morning better?â
I shot her a wink when she peeked at me through the hand that she used to cover her face. âYou know it.â
Her hands fell into her lap and I studied her face. She looked tired. Bloodshot eyes, a little pale, and slumping shoulders. âHey, you okay?â I asked.
Her gaze shifted away, sweeping over the dining room as she nodded without looking at me. Her lips pursed and her arms wrapped around each other. It finally registered that she was in pajamas, so she either drove here wearing them or slept here. She didnât seem like the type to go out in her pjs. Sheâd tried to craft an image of herself in this town, and I didnât think pajamas fit that, no matter how adorable she looked in them.
âAre you sure youâre okay?â I asked, leaning forward. âYou look tired.â
Adeline scoffed and rolled her eyes. âJust what every woman wants to hear. Yes, Iâm fine. It was a long night, I didnât get much sleep.â
âDid you stay here?â
âYes,â she said as the waiter approached the table. He was a guy in his early twenties with a mop of brown hair and thick black-rimmed glasses. Iâd seen him a few times when I ate here.
âWhat can I get yâall started with? Coffee? Tea?â
âCoffee, please,â Adeline said.
âSame. Addie, have you had Delilahâs French toast?â
Adeline shook her head. âShe made some this morning.â
âIt was the first breakfast she made for Gunner, and sheâs feeling sentimental with the wedding so close.
