Perhaps this data should also be related to the percentage of non-tribal population to total population, as that would have a direct bearing on the whole question of ‘identity’. In Tripura, the original proportion has been reversed over the years until it now stands at 71 per cent non-tribal. In that state, population increased by about 800 per cent in the last seventy years, but in the process, indigenous tribes have been pushed out, so that they now form an almost inconsequential minority. The high growth rate of population is no doubt due to a continuing influx of immigrants.
