“Can you repeat what you just said to me? Because I think I must be hallucinating.”

I cringed at Elias’s rough bark. My handler had heard me correctly the first time, and he was going to hate it when I confirmed that for him.

“I told Roxanna what I’m doing here,” I said into the receiver of the shitty old pay phone. There was no one around on account of it being a hundred goddamn degrees out here—about hot enough to cook an egg on the pavement. “And that we’re going to help her out.”

Elias’s breathing was all I heard for a moment.

Then, a resounding crash.

The police force veteran didn’t have the most stable of tempers. It made dealing with guys like me a great job for him, especially because he couldn’t handle working in a traditional office.

“You’re a fucking idiot,” he barked. “We can’t help her. J, we can’t even help you if you fuck this up. You knew that going in.”

“She’s next on the list of women to be trafficked,” I hissed through the line. “That’s the whole point of why I’m here.”

“And we can’t do anything until she gets trafficked. I thought you understood that. Being in your position isn’t easy. It’s not supposed to be. You’re flailing already, and that’s a bad fucking sign.”

Elias had a foul mouth, but amidst the curse words he had a point.

I wasn’t supposed to be saving every individual. I was supposed to be biding my time to save the most people possible in the future.

However, I hadn’t counted on angelic blue eyes and a mess of blonde hair impeding my ability to think. I’d known it when we first met and I was keenly aware now—Roxanna could be my destruction. A damsel in distress, desperately trying to save herself. I couldn’t leave her alone, and I respected her strength something fierce.

“I’m not letting her get sold off to some random guy,” I said.

“You’re going to get yourself killed, and then she’ll still be sold.”

“Not going to happen.”

Elias snorted. “Cocky little shit. I really hoped you would be an easy one to handle, but apparently not. What do you expect me to do? There’s not much I’m capable of. No one higher up is going to help. They’d just pull you if they found out what you told me.”

“Ask around for me? See if you could get her and her brother into witness protection. For anything.”

“Stranger things have happened. I’ll ask some guys I know, but I wouldn’t count on it.”

A man walked by the phone booth, sweat dripping down his face and wetting the collar of his t-shirt. I was sweating like crazy too. This heat was too much, and of course I’d had to walk across town to get to the designated pay phone I was supposed to call Elias with.

“Thanks.”

“Don’t do anything stupid,” Elias grunted. “If you die, it’s on me. Doesn’t matter if you got yourself all messed up over a woman and couldn’t handle the reality of the job.
