Running into my father’s hospital room, leaving Ryder and Callum watching me through the glass separating us, I knew I was right to be concerned. Something inside of me instinctively knew that it was going to be bad and to prepare myself, but how do you prepare yourself to see your superhero broken and crumpled in a hospital bed? The pallor of his skin is an eerie grey and mottled with black and purple bruises. His face is so swollen I almost didn’t recognise him. Tubes are running from both arms, and a heart monitor rhythmically beats beside him providing the only noise in this otherwise silent room.

“Daddy,” I whisper, my voice hitching with pain.

He turns towards me when he hears my voice and my relief is so stark my legs almost buckle.

“Gracie.” His voice is equally as quiet as mine and filled with regret.

“It was all about money, Gracie. She set me up. She set you up.” His breath wheezes in then out in a short gasp, making the monitor beep loudly before resuming its beat.

“Hush now, just rest. I will be right here when you wake up,” I tell him, fighting to stay strong even as a tear escapes my defences and trickles down my cheek.

“She doesn’t know I’ve changed my life insurance policy, naming you as the sole beneficiary. I told her I wanted a divorce and that I knew about Sarah and Josh, and her behaviour towards you. She just laughed at me. I started throwing her things into a case to show her I was serious, and she lost it. I was trying to get past her when she kept spewing vicious shit at me. I remember my chest getting tight and finding it hard to breathe and I knew something was wrong. I told her to phone an ambulance, but she just laughed again saying I was worth more to her dead than alive, and she pushed me down the stairs. Next thing I know I’m waking up here.”

“Everything is going to be okay, Dad,” I tell him, struggling to take in everything he’s telling me. “Take a deep breath and concentrate on getting better.”

“I’m sorry, Gracie,” he whispers, his breath making his chest rattle.

A coughing fit leaves him gasping for air and I hit the nurse’s call button as the monitor starts shrieking. I grab his hand and hold on to him as tight as I can, somehow believing that if I hold on tight enough, I can tether him to me so he can’t leave.

“Daddy, please don’t go. I need you,” I beg but I know, I just know, that the damage has been done. Doctors and nurses stream into the room but I don’t take my eyes away from his.

“I love you, Gracie. Always have, always will.” His eyes drift closed, and his hand goes slack in mine. I squeeze harder, trying to offer him my strength but it’s not enough. The monitor screams from beside us as someone grabs me and tries to push me out the door.
