Chapter Fourteen – Changing Direction

April 2000

I’d been with Vivienne more than a year. She decided to throw me a small anniversary party, with fellow employees only. We descended on the Melting Pot and enjoyed fondue for hours.

Everyone was still trying to cheer me up after the news two weeks prior from the college I’d been planning to attend for three years. I’d decided to take one year off after graduation to save more money working for Viv. I’d been trying to register for upcoming summer classes and couldn’t understand why no one was returning my calls.

A letter at the end of March caused me to lose my composure for the first time in years. “We regret to inform you that after careful consideration, matters in your personal life make it impossible for us to extend our invitation for you to attend. In addition, we must withdraw the scholarship previously awarded to you for Journalism.”

I was floored and confused. I’d worked so hard. After repeated calls to the registrar, I finally talked to an older woman who felt sorry for me after I broke down in an unusual display of hysterics.

As I paced my living room, she told me about a letter received from my mother several months before in which she accused me of repeated drug use and violent behavior. Stating she’d done her best to protect me from myself, she felt the only way I’d learn my lesson was to hit rock bottom and actually have to suffer the consequences of my actions.

Ms. Wakowski said the school had consulted with their legal department. They had been cautioned that the matter was a personal one with a she said/she said element that left them legally vulnerable. If they allowed me to attend and I did have drug and violence problems, the college would be open to liability since they’d shrugged off prior warnings.

Basically, that was it. The goal I’d worked so hard for was dead in the water and I found myself lost for the first time in my life. My mother and I never reestablished a civil relationship. The few times I had no choice but to speak to her, I avoided the subject for fear of true violence on my part.

For her, having stolen such a pivotal part of who I was signified a victory in our never-ending war. She had succeeded in hurting me and that was all she wanted, all she ever cared about. Our relationship never recovered from this one act more than all the others.

All the things I had always believed defined me as a person – my writing and my search for knowledge – were no longer a part of my day-to-day routine. Yes, I could have registered with another school but I was so angry, so disillusioned, that I decided to take a step back. I needed to give myself time to figure out what I really wanted.

As a result, I threw myself into the business of pleasing women with a new-found obsession.
