65. Motion Capture

Note: the action takes place on a sunken stage—a deep thrust, or better yet, in the round.

In the darkness, we hear a scene of boozing, a collage of instantly recognizable sounds. Clinking glassware, cartoon hiccups, “Chug! Chug! Chug!” “Shaken, not stirred,” “… where everybody knows your name!”

Sounds fade down as lights fade up on a featureless stage. A performer enters the stage at one corner, staggering drunk. Not obviously a trained dancer, this performer still betrays something “technical” through these movements across the stage. As chaos goes, this is pretty well-polished stuff.

Slowly, the performer gets to the far corner of the stage and exits. Lights start to fade, but then suddenly rebound, as if, hey, they’d almost forgotten something. A bright white dot appears at one corner of the stage. It zigs and zags and, wherever it’s been, a faint line lingers on the stage, glowing white. This is the path our drunkard took.

A series of dancers cross the stage, following the line, but imbuing their movements with different styles, different meaning, different levels of gravity or levity. Dancers come out alone, in pairs, in trios, en masse—eventually filling the stage with their imitations, send-ups, departures, homages, and fantasias. Perhaps the same sound effects fade up again, but, gaining rhythm, appear almost musical. Perhaps an illuminated grid appears on the stage. Perhaps the new paths taken by the dancers are traced out on this grid in glowing lines, each a different color. Anyway, it’s beautiful chaos—and, by now, we’re all getting pretty drunk. Do you remember how it ends?
